Marketing and Sales Tips – Why Customers Stay With You

I hope you are doing well.

A few weeks ago I got a sales call from a guy named Eric. He broke probably every rule regarding selling I can think of so I’m going to use the conversation I had with him as an example of what not to do.

First of all, he started out saying, “Hi, this is Eric, do you remember me?” I didn’t as he didn’t know me and I said I didn’t. He then told me he didn’t know me but I’d be surprised on how many people act as if they remembered. First rule broken, don’t try to make a fool of your potential client. People, especially those who are going to spend money with you, like to be treated with respect.

He then asked me about what we did for our clients. I briefly told him that we use search engines and strategically placed articles and press releases to drive traffic to our client’s sites. He then said to me in a condescending way, “ever heard of e-mail?”

Now, those of you who know me will remember I was featured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal in 2002, for sending e-mail, so I started to laugh and told him to Google my name. Second rule broken, actually spend a few minutes and know who you are talking to.

Then he said it didn’t matter as he wasn’t interested in speaking to me but to my boss. Third strike, I’m the president of the company.

So what did he really do wrong? Practically everything. He didn’t know who he was talking to, didn’t research it at all. I also wondered if his e-mail service was so great, why was he cold calling me? Additionally, he invalidated me. I’m sure not going to do business with someone who is condescending and thinks he’s more important that I am.

Why am I telling you this? Well, I just want you to remember that your potential clients are important. Treat them like gold and they’ll stay with you through thick and thin. Treat them badly, and they’ll run.

With all the news on the economy, they still stay because you care about them and give them what they expect from you.

I’m sure you know all this but every once in a while we need to be reminded. I did and boy was that quite a reminder.
